Abstract

Lixus junci Boh. is a circummediterranean species nuisible to sugarbeets and other Beta vulgaris subspecies. Around 1960, L. junci was being extensively investigated (Maceljski, 1963). Research data concerning its distribution, nuisibility, temperature influence on its development, host plants of adults and larvae, and results of trials with insecticides, were published earlier (Maceljski, 1964, 1967, 1977, 1981). Morphological data were newer published. Synonyms of L. junci Boh. are L. ascanioides Villa, L. conicollis Boh., L. chawneri Woll, L. myagri Dahl., L. jurinei Boh. and probably L. striato-punctatus Desbr. Important distinctions between L. junci and Lixus ascanii L., which two species have been and are often confused, are shown in a table based on original research. The male and female of L. junci are extensively described, and many original measures of the entire body as well as body parts given. A description with original drawings of larvae and pupae is also given.
