Sažetak

The article comprises topics relating to the position of Turkey, following the EU Helsinki Summit (17 December 1999), when Turkey was finally recognised the status of a candidate for the EU accession. Consequently, Turkey will have to share, despite its specific position and the important role the country plays in international politics, the fate of transition countries on their way to the European integration. The author analyses Turkish internal politics, that is the results of the general election held on 18 April 1999, and concludes that the formation of the new three-party coalition government created the basic preconditions far a stable growth and intensified processes essential far the reforms. Turkey will have to set forth new foreign policy priorities and redefine the substance and meaning of its "national interests".
