Sažetak

In Croatian historiography and to the general public, the First World War or the Great War is often forgotten and overshadowed by other conflicts of the 20th century, especially by the much larger and more tragic Second World War. However, the Great War certainly affected the whole of society and smaller local communities throughout Europe, including the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy as well. Although the war was not fought on Croatian historical territory, Croats did participate in it, fighting in the terrible conditions of everyday war and losing their lives on the European fronts in the fight “for the Emperor” and the Habsburg Monarchy. Due to mobilisation and constant conscription into the Austro-Hungarian army, almost all town communities were left without a part of their population – in this way the town of Senj and its surroundings made a great human sacrifice in the Great War.
