Sažetak

The paper focuses on metatextual procedures in the novel Totenwande. Zidovi smrti [Totenwande. The Walls of Death] by Daša Drndić. By observing metatextuality as something “which speaks for itself” in the framework of discourse, it becomes possible for all narrative procedures to be observed in their mutual interaction, which leads to establishing the full meaning of a literary work. As a methodological basis, we have selected Linda Hutcheon’s theoretical system which distinguishes between diegetic and linguistic self-consciousness of a text. Diegetic self-consciousness refers to the process of constructing a story, i.e. to the narrative process, while linguistic self-consciousness refers to the linguistic nature of a literary text, i.e. to the building blocks of literary discourse. Within both these two models of metatextual novelistic prose, there are two kinds of forms: overt forms and covert (actualised) forms. We speak of overt metatextual forms when self-consciousness is expressed with explicit thematisation or allegorisation of their diegetic/linguistic identity within the work itself. Actualised forms comprise an identical process but with the following distinction: the process is now internalised, i.e. actualised in its diegetic/linguistic structure. The purpose of this paper is to consider diegetic and linguistic self-consciousness in the novel Totenwande. Zidovi smrti [Totenwande. The Walls of Death] by Daša Drndić.
