Geodetic Works on Recovery of the Cupola on the Cathedral St. Jakov in Šibenik

Sažetak
Due to the great efforts of conservators in the State Agency, Bishop's office for Civil Engineering of the City of Split, stone-masons from Pučišće on Brač, constructors and surveyors of the Geodetic Institute d.d. in Split, there was a very successful recovery of the cupola on the cathedral of St. Jakov carried out in October and November 1996. During the Homeland War the stone cupola was hit by two direct shots by Yugoslav Navy during very frequent attacks onto the city of Šibenik. Since during the Homeland War there was no possibility to raise some funds for reconstructing the damages, and taking into consideration the safety of constructors during recovery, the reconstruction of the cupola and other damaged objects in the vicinity of the cathedral could start only at the end of the year 1996 supported by the world community and the Republic of Croatia. In order to protect the cupola at least party during the war, there was protective scaffolding built of wood and iron material erected around the cupola, and the hit stone plate and ribs were protected with Plexiglas pasted with silicon mass. As suggested by the conservators and the State Commission for the cathedral reconstruction, the existing state of the stone cupola was to be surveyed before replacing the damaged stone plates and ribs, so that they could be placed in their original position after the recovery. Surveying was made on the selected characteristic measuring spots, i.e. points (connection of rib tip segments, up and down) that were suggested by surveyors. Each control point was numbered and marked with fibre-tip waterproof pen. For each point a very precise positional description was made so that the measuring point could be established again whenever necessary. It is very important to point out that the accuracy of repeated stabilizing of single stone plates and ribs was above the set criteria demanded by the ordered, i.e. ±2 mm horizontal and ±1 mm for vertical discrepancies.
