Sažetak

Prevention of osteoporosis begins during pregnancy i.e., before birth with proper nutrition of the pregnant woman and by ensuring good vitamin D levels during pregnancy. Prevention of osteoporosis continues throughout life. Peak bone mass is determined primarily genetically, but to achieve full genetic potential, a proper diet that includes an adequate intake of calcium and protein and ensuring good vitamin D levels along with physical activity during childhood and adolescence is important. The same factors that influence peak bone mass are essential for the preservation of bone mass in adulthood and for slowing down bone loss in old age. Bone mass is affected by harmful habits such as physical inactivity, inadequate nutrition, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Therefore, public health policies should be aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle in order to preserve bone health.
