Caving equipment: causes of damage and proper maintenance

Sažetak
Caving equipment is the most important tool that a speleologist uses in cave research. Because of this, it is extremely important to recognize the damage to caving equipment in order to prevent potential tragic consequences. This review article covers the most common causes of damage to caving equipment. The proper use of caving equipment in order to prevent possible damage is especially emphasized. The proper maintenance of different parts of equipment is briefly described. Special attention is drawn to damage caused by lack of maintenance. Well-maintained equipment is safer, lasts longer and is less likely to fail. For this reason, maintenance and proper use of caving equipment should be a priority for every speleologist.
