Sažetak
The media play an increasing role in the socialisation of the young generation, thus increasingly influencing children's development in the last thirty years. The media have the most significant impact on the process of socialisation of children, i.e. on the adoption of cultural values, attitudes, beliefs and social norms. However, the rapid development of mass media in the 20th century has changed the way of life, as well as the way children learn and spend their free time. The emergence of the Internet and globalisation have changed awareness, manner of communication and mutual relations. The Internet and social media have become a part of everyday life, they have torn down the boundaries of time and space, the boundaries of cognition have long since crossed the boundaries of community and culture. Social media are no longer only used for private posts and socialising, for business contacts and promotion, but rather they are increasingly becoming a relevant tool for following key news and information and for educational content. The paper explores the extent to which children in primary schools in the City of Zagreb and Dubrovnik use social media such as Facebook or Instagram to exchange educational content, information and school materials. Research has shown that, with the emergence of modern, personalised media used by children, the child becomes information, news or cultural content. Through frequent use of "smart" devices and the Internet, children are placed in a state of greater dependence on media content, receiving large amounts of useless information, unreliable news, lack of culture, the possibility of plagiarism and even media violence. In this manner, children, as society's most vulnerable group, are placed in a subordinate position to the media. Education is necessary to equip children to use social media correctly.
