DIKW – hierarchy – the importance of the hierarchy for information science

Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to present and analyze the meaning of DIKW – hierarchy that structures and connects the concepts of information, knowledge, data and wisdom into a complete information hierarchy. In order to bring the topic closer to the goal, theoretical explanations of the DIKW – hierarchy will be presented and an attempt will be made to answer the question of whether the Information Hierarchy has a chance of survival as a basic model and framework explaining the relationship between its main concepts in information science. The paper presents a review of the literature on the DIKW – hierarchy model. Introductory considerations will show the origin and development of the DIKW – hierarchy, and its loudest criticisms will be presented. The topic of DIKW – hierarchy will be discussed as a description of the adequate relationship between data, information, knowledge and wisdom. The methodology of content analysis reviewed about thirty articles in which the following aspects were analyzed: data, information, knowledge and wisdom as the main concepts of the DIKW – hierarchy. Their relations are analyzed, and a historical overview of the development and critique of this model is presented. The results of this paper are reflected in a better understanding of the role of the DIKW model – hierarchy in information science, its main concepts and provides a basis for understanding the likely future of this model in further theoretical interpretations. The considerations and conclusions confirm the leading role of DIKW -hierarchy as a model that has a certain future in information science and represents a starting point for further reflections on the challenges in defining mutual relations. The paper confirms the importance and significance of the DIKW – hierarchy model.Its value is manifested in promoting further discussion of the hierarchy itself while equally encouraging discussion of the relationship among its main concepts, as opposed to a discussion that is mainly focused on their individual definition.
