The Aureus of Maximianus from the 1805 Petrijanec Treasure

In October 2005 much publicity was caused by the discovery of a considerable treasure unearthed at Petrijanec near Varaždin, containing 114 kilogrammes, i.e. 27.735 Roman 3rd century coins and three pieces of silver plate, once buried in a barrel. This recent discovery at Petrijanec brought memories of another important treasure trove made two hundred years previously, in 1805, in the same village. Besides the 144 aurei (most probably originally there were c. 230 coins) struck by: Trajanus (98-117) (1); Hadrianus (117-138) (1), Antoninus Pius (138-161) (6), Marcus Aurelius (161-180) (5); Faustina II (130-170) (8); Lucius Verus (161-169) (1); Julia Domna (-217) (1), Caracalla (198-217) (4); Gordianus III (238-244) (1), Valerianus (253-259) (1); Gallienus (253-268) (1); Aurelianus (270-275) (?1); Tacitus (275-276) (8); Probus (276-282) (37), Carus (282-283) (2); Magnia Urbica (-284) (5); Carinus (283-285) (31); Numerianus (283-284) (15); Nigrinianus (285) (?1); Diocletianus (284-305) (11), Maximianus (286-305) (1); Julianus (285) (2), and the unique gold medallion of Carus and Carinus, there were also several pieces of jewellery, among which a pair of bracelets and seven pendants in which Roman aurei were mounted. The only aureus known to have been found at Petrijanec is the specimen (RIC VI, 558, 33, Inv. No. C12848) kept at the Zagreb Archaological Museum Numismatic Collection, presented in c. 1850 by Ladislav Kiš de Šaulovec, as documented in the inventory kept by Major Mijat Sabljar. It was struck in 305/6 in Nicomedia, its diameter is 20 mm, and it weighs 5.46 grammes, axe 12. While the recent hoard belongs to the category of the so-called military treasuries, and was hidden in A.D. 294, the treasure found in 1805 must have been private property and was buried after A.D. 305/6.
