Sažetak

Aim: Present the most common reasons for the rejection of potential blood donors by gender and to compare them between the cities of Osijek and Zagreb. Respondents and methods: The research was conducted according to the principle of a retrospective study during 2021 from the database of the Croatian Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Zagreb and the Clinical Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Osijek. The chi-square test was used, while statistical analysis was performed using the MedCalc software system (version 14.12.0, MedCalcSoftware) with a significance level of P<0,05. Results: The Croatian Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Zagreb as the most common reason for rejection of potential blood donors states low hemoglobin concentration which led to the rejection of 7.119 of which 2.583 (36%) were men and 4.536 (64%) were women. Also, the Clinical Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Osijek rejected the most potential blood donors due to low hemoglobin concentration, 660 of which 235 (36%) were men and 425 (64%) were women. After processing the data, there is no statistically significant difference in the rejection of potential blood donors due to hemoglobin in Zagreb and Osijek, comparing them by gender (P = 0.729). There were 3,855 potential blood donors rejected due to the blood pressure in Zagreb, while 2.375 (62%) were men, and 1.480 (38%) were women. There were 369 rejected potential blood donors due to the blood pressure in Osijek; 141 (38%) were men and 228 were women (62%). There is a statistically significant difference in the rejection of potential blood donors due to the blood pressure in cities by gender (P<0,001). Conclusion: The most common reasons for refusing voluntary blood donors in 2021 at the Croatian Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Zagreb and the Clinical Institute for Transfusion Medicine in Osijek are low hemoglobin concentration and blood pressure in both sexes.
