Sažetak

Agricultural and especially the sector of animal production are going to face a number of challenges in the future: fast growth of world population, climate change, increasing demand for energy, resources deficiency, speeding urbanisation, global changes of dietary habits, aging of rural population in developed countries, more competition on world markets and difficulties in obtaining low-interest loans in developing countries. In order to prevent global food supply insecurity, it is necessary, with regard to both the qualitative and the quantitatve aspect, to ensure sustainable intensification of agricultural and animal production sectors. Animal production intensification implies increasing farm size and the productivitiy of animals and reducing workforce. Precision agricultural and animal production is the optimal solution in current technological circumstances. Precision production technologies rely on using various sensors and managing extensive data bases in order to obtain information about animal health, wellfare, production and reproductive efficiency. These information are necessary for a farmer who wants to manage his farm in an optimal way to create an efficient and ecologically sustainable system of production. In general, animal production sector has to establish production systems that provide safe and healthy food supply, reduced environmental impact, improved resources utilisation and ecosystem services. In other words such systems that are able to, at the same time, contribute to sustainable economy and satisfy consumers’ needs in an adequate way. Last but not least, it is necessary to educate population that we feed, since agricultural and animal production are not pollluters of our planet and there are not alternative food production methods. Finally, agricultural and animal production is the reason why our civilisation developed and is indispensable when it comes to feeding world population.
