Sažetak

The German philosopher and characterologist Ludwig Klages can be considered a pioneer of ecological thinking. First of all, he publicly denounced the destruction of nature in the modern world in unprecedented severity with his article “Man and Earth”, which he wrote on the occasion of the 1913 meeting of the Free German Youth from all German states on the Hoher Meißner mountain near Kassel. In this, Klages was completely in the tradition that began with Romanticism and was embodied by conservationists of the early 19th century such as Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl and Ernst Rudorff. But unlike them, he named the spiritual cause of man’s alienation from the rest of nature – anthropocentrism. According to him, it is at the core of both monotheistic religions and the materialistic belief in progress that has prevailed since the time of the Enlightenment. Although Klages’ thoughts were still “the voice of a caller in the wilderness” during his lifetime, the environmental movements that emerged in the 1970s have revisited many of his views – from biocentrism to ecology as a leading science.
