Sažetak

Biological control of pests on vegetable crops in protected areas in the Republic of Croatia has increased since 2006, regardless of its high cost. The most common form of biological protection in pest control in vegetable crops used by vegetable producers to control economically important pests is the use of predators and parasitoids. The vegetable crops in the protected area where parasitoids and predators are most commonly used are tomatoes and peppers; cucumbers are somewhat less common. Economically important pests controlled by predators on vegetables in a protected area are thrips (Thysanoptera) and whiteflies (Aleryodidae), and somewhat less commonly aphids and mites. The application of biological control requires greater knowledge of agricultural producers and the constant presence of qualified consultants to advise producers on the application of biological products. The role of professionals knowledgeable in biological control is therefore increasing, and they are increasingly needed in this field to support farmers to achieve the objectives of reducing the use of chemical pesticides, as set out in European Union strategies.
