Effects of Croatian-Italian contact in the language production of a bilingual child

Abstract
In this paper, code-switching/mixing and transfer from one language to another is
studied on the example of spontaneous language production of a bilingual child in a
two-year period between the ages of three and five. The data analysed have been collected
by the parents in a diary. Diary notes are one of offline data collection methods in
the field of longitudinal studies of first language acquisition and language development
(cf. Caselli et al. 2015: 59-61; Palmović/Kuvač 2007: 22). Code-mixing is one of the effects
of the coexistence and contact of two languages in the mind of a bilingual child. In this
paper we will analyse examples of Croatian-Italian intrasentential and word-internal
code-mixing attested in the spontaneous language production of a bilingual child. The
data violate certain restrictions on code-switching/mixing proposed in the literature (e.g.
Poplack 1980; Sankoff / Poplack 1981; Belazi et al. 1994). As another effect of contact, we
will also describe examples of the transfer of rules from one language to the other, namely
phonologically, semantically and morphosyntactically conditioned instances of transfer.
Finally, we will highlight a series of theoretical questions raised by the analysed examples,
as well as a possible contribution of this kind of research to applied linguistics.
