Abstract

The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed intensive urban development changes in Dubrovnik and its surroundings. Modernisation processes aimed at the adaptation of the existing structures were governed by the political and military plans of the Habsburg Monarchy, best exemplified in the transformation of ports, which reached its peak between the 1868 and 1874. However, utilitarian port infrastructural works resulted in the planning of new social focal points, promenades, and also generated the development of new park zones.
The projects of the transformation of the port zones were signed by the engineers and their assistants in the construction office in Dubrovnik, Marco Nonveiller, Marin Boriani, dr. Luigi Pederzolli and Nicola Gandusio being among them. Dubrovnik city port was the biggest development site in this period: the quays were extended and the new Porporela breakwater was built. The renaissance of port development included the adaptation of the ports of Korčula, Orebić, Trpanj, demarcation of navigation routes by building lighthouses and port lights, construction of quays in Mokošica, Sustjepan,
Cavtat etc., as well as the extension of the dock in Pile.
