Sažetak
For the research of the avant-garde, Maria Lazar’s "Die Vergiftung" (1920) is of interest as a novel that positions itself at the intersection of pre-avant-garde vitalism and late expressionist avant-garde. This intermediary position is also reflected in the olfactory motifs within the text, which are expounded in detail following an outline of the meaning of ambivalent smells in modernism and the avant-garde. The limited documents pertaining to the unsuccessful novel by the well-connected author reveal that its reception was, to some extent, shaped by the olfactory motifs. The potential of Lazar’s vitalistic olfactory culture only became evident after her breakthrough in
the movement of Neue Sachlichkeit.
