Sažetak

The earliest preserved notarial acts from Dalmatian communal towns, dating from late 13th and early 14th century, witness the existence of the institution of communal physicians, surgeons
and apothecaries. The duty of the communal physician was to care for all inhabitants of the town, free of charge or for a minimal fee, and to report any wounds or sudden deaths that came into their knowledge and that were possibly caused by acts of physical violence.
None of Dalmatian towns had a university so the need for professionals in communal service had to be fulfilled by importing physicians, surgeons, apothecaries and notaries from abroad, especially Italy. This unidirectional inflow of highly qualified work force continued even when the number of Dalmatians students at overseas universities increased in Renaissance. Authors of three testaments and one codicil with inventory from the first half of 17th century, which are presented in this paper, were Zadar physicians of Italian origin who spent all or parts of their professional life in Zadar, the capital of Venetian Dalmatia, but remained attached to their homeland. Their last wills are abundant with details concerning social and economical status of Zadar physicians in the contemporary Zadar society. The inventory of the property of physician Cesare Delfini is particularly interesting from the viewpoint of history
of medicine, as it contains the list of medical instruments that Cesare Delfini used in his practice. This list is compared to the two other inventories of medical instruments known from the literature, in order to gain a perspective into the type and the extent of medical procedures that physicians of that period were conducting.
