A note on the finds of gold coins attributed to Constantine V Copronymus, Basil I and Romanos III Argyros in the plain of Knin (Kninsko polje)

Abstract
Gold coins featuring the images of Byzantine emperors Constantine V Copronymus, Basil I and Romanos III Argyros have recently been discovered in locations previously known only from the Starinarski dnevnici (Antiquarian Journals) by Lujo Marun, which have not been precisely identified until now. The authors of this paper primarily rely on Marun’s work, without engaging in discussions regarding the exact microtoponymic designations of Brgeljuša, Mađarlija, Smokovac and
Grgića glavica. However, the reviewing of the cadastral records of Knin revealed that the land plots Brgeljuša and Mađarlija have retained their names since Marun’s time. This revelation allowed for a more precise determination of the area in which these coins were discovered. Grgića glavica on the other hand is a toponym that should be linked exclusively
to the eponymous hamlet in Vrpolje. Although the toponym Smokovac is largely forgotten today, the broader region can still be easily identified in the cadastral records from the time of Habsburg rule. The locations identified in this paper are Brgeljuša, Mađarlija, Smokovac and Grgića glavica, which were put into the wider context of and linked to nearby archaeological sites and areas of strategic significance.
