Mathematics and its history on postage stamps

Sažetak

With the development of information and communication technology, communication patterns between people changed as well. Older generations used to write letters by hand and mail them. As computers became more accessible, writing by hand was replaced by writing using computers and sending e-mails. More recent generations, such as the so-called Generation Z, commonly use applications on their smart devices and it is very rare that a member of that generation ever wrote a letter and mailed it to a friend and/or a family member. As part of mathematics classes in primary schools, students are presented with a historical overview of mathematics and prominent mathematicians. Writing a letter is included in the Croatian language curriculum for the eighth grade of primary schools. The aim of this paper is to present the project of popularizing mathematics using an unusual mix of a long-forgotten skill of letter writing and artificial intelligence. The project was carried out in two eight grades in the Posavski Bregi Primary School. The paper presents the results of the project and describes the emotions students experienced while writing and expecting a letter, as well as what students discovered in their interviews with parents and grandparents.
