The effect of year, location and variety on the protein content and grain yield of the Bc winter-wheat varieties

Sažetak

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the second most important arable crop in the Republic of Croatia. In addition to the grain yield, the protein content is becoming increasingly important following the introduction of the Code of Purchase of Cereals and Oilseeds. In a triennial study of six winterwheat varieties, conducted on ten locations throughout the Republic of Croatia, the effect of year, location, and variety on the grain yield and protein content was assessed. The analysis of variance proved a significant effect of year, location, and variety on the protein content and grain yield. The year × location interaction was significant, while the year × variety and location × variety interactions, respectively, were not significant for any of the studied traits. Based on the share of the sum of squares of individual sources of variability in the total sum of squares, the greatest influence on the protein content was exerted by year, followed by variety location. Year also had the greatest impact on the grain yield, followed by location and variety. Based on the calculated coefficient of variation over the years, locations, and varieties, protein content proved to be a more stable trait than the grain yield.
