Sažetak

The conservation principle requires that, when restoring cultural monuments, identical materials or the closest to them are used, because “patches” of this kind comply with the whole and do not stand out as a foreign body. Insofar as static stability is jeopardized, we are compelled to use the newest, least aggressive materials that will secure the object’s stability and extend its life. Lime mortars have simple compositions and they are distinguished on the basis of the places at which they are applied on the monument itself. The most fundamental differences are in mortars that must have either higher compressive strength or be more porous. Tempers must be applied to these variations or the preparation method for the mortar must be distinguished. Practical examples are provided to engender a better understanding: Basic lime mortar: slaked lime : sand (1:3 ratio); Lime mortar with increased compressive strength or natural hydraulic lime (NHL) mortar: slaked lime : sand - ratio 1 : 3 + tempers such as silica, volcanic ash, common ash, baked bauxite soil (ground old tiles); Porous lime mortar: quicklime : sand (ratio 1 : 7). These are just the basic parameters that must be incorporated during the preparation of a restoration project. The problems that generally emerge in practice pertain to a lack of familiarity with traditional materials and techniques, so that resistance to such solutions appear. When restoring a cultural monument, we always aspire to ensure that the undertaking is optimal and that traces of the present day are kept to a minimum so that the monument is conveyed to future generations with the least interventions. We attempt to adapt the end to the architecture that is in place, rather than adapt the existing architecture to a desired end. A monument is original only if we appreciate its basic idea, construction method and current condition, and it is precisely through these parameters that we compose the revitalization of monuments in both the material and immaterial aspects.
