Sažetak

During the exploitation of buried and submerged steel pipelines and tanks, cathodic protection as a means of continuous corrosion control significantly contributes to maintaining pipeline integrity. Pipeline integrity refers to its ability to safely operate under predetermined conditions, including pressure. MAOP (Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure) represents the maximum pressure under which a pipeline can safely operate without the risk of perforation and fluid loss.
Given that cathodic protection is considered an exceptionally effective technique whose efficiency needs to be monitored, the user or maintainer of the system can successfully assess its effectiveness using certain tools. This assessment should be part of the overall integrity management. In this context, it is necessary to develop a program for system operation using current normative references, and then, based on the collected data, which have a minimum scope defined by the standard, make an evaluation of effectiveness.
Data can be obtained through remote reporting and field testing. Data collected through remote reporting provide an image of continuity/discontinuity of operation, while field testing results are analysed in terms of achieved cathodic polarization. To use the described program, it is necessary to define the system observation boundaries in advance, especially in the case of very long pipelines, a large number of steel tanks, etc. In such cases, the system can be systematized in the form of separate sections or individual tanks.
The assessment of cathodic protection effectiveness should result in the overall state and identify those sections of the pipeline or individual tanks where the cathodic protection system is inadequate.
In summary, by evaluating the effectiveness of cathodic protection, the owner obtains an important parameter used as one of the input data in the final integrity assessment and the potential implementation of corrective actions.
