Abstract

The paper starts with a brief overview of the most important characteristics
of trivial literature and popular culture, as well as a romance novel that developed under the auspices of trivial literature. Romance novel is an example of
a literary work written primarily for a female audience and contains typified
characters, patterns, and episodes that are frequently repeated. The term trivial
literature was used in the early stages of research into subliterary genres and
popular literature. From the 1990s till the present, this term has been problematized. The theoretical part of this paper shows the portrayal of women and
love relationships in romance novels. The novel Ne traži me u sebi (1985.),
written by Croatian author Ana Žube, served as a basis for this analysis. The
paper reexamines the depiction of women based on the novel Ne traži me u
sebi, women’s physical and psychological characterization, as well as her social
background and education. In conclusion, we have to mention elements such as
transformations of female characters and male prejudices against women which
interwine together.
