Sažetak
With the expansion of the European Union, the boundaries of countries importing labor are shifting, with Southern and Eastern Europe, including Croatia,
becoming newly discovered destinations for workers from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Recruitment agencies, both in South Asia
and Croatia, dominate migration processes but often lead to manipulation and
exploitation of workers. The lives of new labor migrants in Croatia are marked
by episodes of satisfaction, but also by extreme poverty and uncertainty. Foreign workers need to be viewed separately, not just under the umbrella of “foreign labor migrants,” considering the different niches they occupy in the labor
market and the context of their arrival. Migrants from South Asia are likely not
to be just temporary workers; their arrival will have a more permanent character - whether Croatia serves as their first step towards other European countries,
or they choose to stay here.
