Sažetak
Introduction: Burnout syndrome is common among nurses due to chronic workplace stress, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. Nurses face emotionally and physically demanding working conditions daily, which increases the risk of burnout. The consequences of this syndrome affect not only the individual well-being of nurses but also the quality of care they provide to patients, reducing their work efficiency and increasing the risk of errors. In this context, mentorship emerges as a key strategy for preventing burnout by providing emotional support, fostering professional development, and enhancing stress management skills, all of which contribute to greater job satisfaction and improved quality of care.
Methods: A review of relevant literature on mentorship in preventing burnout among nurses was conducted using Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL databases, with keywords "mentorship," "nurses," "burnout prevention," "emotional support," and "professional development." Included were studies from 2009 to 2024 that examine the impact of mentorship on nurses' well-being and professional development in clinical settings. Excluded were non-peer-reviewed, irrelevant studies and those in languages other than English and Croatian. The search focused on structured mentorship programs and their effects on reducing burnout and improving work-life balance.
Results and Discussion: Mentorship is key in providing emotional support, developing stress management skills, and enhancing professional development. Experienced mentors help nurses develop emotional intelligence, identify stressors, and apply coping strategies, which reduces burnout rates and increases job satisfaction. Mentorship also contributes to strengthening professional identity and balancing personal and professional life.
Conclusion: Structured mentorship programs are crucial for reducing burnout among nurses and improving their emotional stability and job satisfaction, which positively impacts the quality of care they provide for patients.
