Sažetak

In this paper, the antimicrobial activity of ozonated water, generated in the form of droplets (326-400 µm) and mist (145-225 µm), in concentrations of 4 ppm and 2 ppm, against six carabapenem- and colistin- resistant strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae originating from wastewater was investigated. The results showed an extremely high effectiveness of ozonated water as an antimicrobial agent. The number of K. pneumoniae was statistically significantly reduced compared to the control and ranged from 76.38 to 99.77% for ozone applied in droplet form at a concentration of 4 ppm, or from 17.02 to 98.71% for 2 ppm ozone applied in the form of a nebula. Ozonated water was most effective against three strains of K. pneumoniae (SE_SC_COL_46, SE_SC_COL_86 and SE_SC_COL_96), and the reduction in the number of these strains was more than 95% for each of the four treatments. However, some strains of K. pneumoniae survived in a significantly higher percentage, depending on the treatment applied. The biggest deviation from the average results was detected for the strain SE_SC_COL_102, and the concentration of ozonated water of 2 ppm in the form of mist reduced only 17.02% of these bacteria. In general, the method of application of ozonated water, as well as the concentration of applied ozone (4 or 2 ppm), significantly affects the proportion of reduced bacteria, and the effectiveness also depends on the strain to which a particular treatment is applied. Although the effectiveness of the inactivation of microorganisms using both concentrations of ozonated water was extremely high, on average the better result was achieved at the ozone concentration of 4 ppm in the water, and when it was applied in the form of a droplet.
