Sažetak
In 1700, though the Treaty of Karlowitz had been concluded, the line of the Venetian – Habsburg border was still not defined. Thus, the Venetian Republic sent to this area engineer, geodesist and mathematician Doroteo Alimari, who was accompanied by painter and mathematician Gasparo della Vecchia. Alimari documented the border area by using geodesic measurements and remarks on the environment, settlements and population, whilst Della Vecchia recorded individual scenes in drawings. Alimari first measured the height of the Velebit Mountain and the distances at its foot from the island of Pag; they subsequently climbed its crest, from where they observed locations in Lika. After returning to the sea, they entered the Zrmanja River and reached its upper flow. They subsequently visited Knin, and finally climbed up the Debelo brdo Mountain, the meeting point at the border among the three states (the Venetian Republic, the Ottoman Empire, and the Habsburg Empire) – the so-called Triplex confinium. Alimari measured the distances and angles from all positions, whilst Della Vecchia documented the scenes in drawings. The collaboration of the two experts in this mission is a fine example of interfusion of technical knowledge, art and observation, which had its political connotations too. The Venetian Republic searched for arguments in favour of keeping the areas under its surveillance in such an unstable constellation, as the Habsburg State claimed its entitlement to these areas too. The paper furthermore offers a brief report by engineer Antonio Moser de Filseck, dated 1773. It has been kept at the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice under the joint call number with Alimari’s text, and witnesses to the fact that the Venetian–Habsburg border area had been unstable throughout the remainder of the 18th century, up to the end of the Venetian Republic.
