Sažetak

Slobodan Novak’s (1924–2016) narrative fiction is coherent and consistently written in first-person. Motifs are either interrelated, complementary or reinforce particular meaning from one text to the next. They are connected through the autodiegetic narrator, who confronts both other characters and his own past identities, making in the process a scene of writing typical of a picaresque narrative. Novak’s ouvre is thus comparable with English and American 1950s and 1960s fiction of the so-called angry young men, but also with much older tradition, i.e. the picaresque, which can be determined in Novak's literary pieces on their own, as well as in the ouvre as a whole. This particular way of viewing Novak's literary ouvre methodologically excludes interpretations based on his biography, tying him closely to the carnival understood in Bakhtinian terms. Following recent development in research of the picaresque and applied to Novak’s ouvre, the paper argues Novak’s prose has all the hallmarks of the picaresque, from protagonist's profile and chronotope to typical motifs, plot and language. To name but a few: the hero is always on the outskirts of society, be it willingly or involuntarily; he speaks in his own voice from below, addressing his issues with temporary masters whom he is obliged to serve; he is disillusioned but nonetheless cracks jokes and ridicules both himself and his circumstances; his life story abounds in twists and turns, only to be told as a cautionary tale, whereby the narrator underscores his blindness and biases he held as a hero.
