Sažetak

Considering Slobodan Novak’s relation to theatre in its entirety, i.e. including his radio plays, dramatic dialogues, plays based on his prose fiction, author’s interviews and texts about theatre, some polemical writing, and a small number of play reviews and observations, one cannot underestimate the very biographical fact Novak was appointed the Director of the Drama for two years at the National Theatre in Split early in his literary career (1955 - 1958). Stressing the fact that scripts of the plays by some of the top global playwrights emerged in theatre precisely in the process of working with actors, i.e. when the author changed his writing during the course of the play, added or omitted words to better suit actor’s performance and word delivery, as well as writing characters to be played specifically by a particular actor, all of Novak’s opinions and views on theatre, playwrights, writing for performance and theatre, point to his early experience in theatre as formative for his literary writing, particularly in terms of scene development. Thus, theatre preceded his radio plays, dramatic dialogues, famous novellas, TV and film scripts; sitting in Director’s chair for two seasons, not only did he pick plays, directors to stage them, and actors for roles, but he also himself participated in play production, as it is evident from his writing on theatre, thus contributing to transformation of the text into the living word on stage.
