THE FEUDS IN THE 18th CENTURY VENETIAN DALMATIA

Abstract
In this paper the author analyses the situation on the Dalmatian feuds, according to the list made in 1779. This document titled »Feudi in Dalmazia sotto il governo veneto« can be found in the Science Library in Zadar. The classification number of this manuscript is 110.
The list is made as a result of an initiative of the central authorities in Venice. Governor of the province delegated this job to the public notaries and high-level
officials in Zadar. The landowners were devided in two groups: laical and ecclesiastical, all in all 13 landowners. All documents starting from the beginnings of the 18th century were collected and transcribed for each landowner. Development of each land can be traced clearly from those transcriptions. The document includes abundance of statistical data, very precise maps with the graphical design of the lands and their structure. It represents a very valuable source for the research in history of Dalmatia in the 18th century. The document shows an effort on the part of the authorities to cope with the numerous malfeasances that kept undermining the state fisk.
