Sažetak
The fate of the Dubrovnik Archives after the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic has been the subject of scientific historiography, but scientific historiography has not yet addressed this issue in the context of the development of archives and the archival profession during the Austrian administration. This period of about hundred years was a very intense time during which the seemingly but also truly marginalized so-called old archives, together with the holdings created by the work of the administrative bodies of the Austrian administration, underwent the transformation of their meaning, following the needs of a society that was rapidly modernizing through the establishment of new institutions. The authors observed all these processes in the broader context of the reorganization of state archives and the archival service of the Austrian part of the Monarchy, which had begun, but was not completed, during the short period of 1869/70. For the period lasting until the acceptance of the reorganization proposals in 1893/94 and the establishment of the permanent I. R. Archives Council, the key moments of archival issues that were resolved by the I. R. Central Commission for the Investigation and Preservation of Art and Historical Monuments, together with the I. R. Ministry of the Interior, responsible for political archives, were presented. All these processes ultimately had an impact on the fate of old Dalmatian archives, and in the case of the Dubrovnik Archives set its development towards the I. R. Dubrovnik Archives. After the consolidation of the holdings of the former Republic, once assigned to the political, judicial, financial and port maritime medical offices in Dubrovnik, this Archives grew into a true I. R. institution as the State Archives in Dubrovnik, under the permanent management of a professionally trained archivist. Despite the ups and downs, the authors confirm the continuity of care, at least with regard to the most valuable part of the holdings that were administratively assigned to the central political and judicial bodies in Dubrovnik, and the holdings transferred to the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna during the “Age of Metternich”.
