Sažetak
This paper briefly presents and analyzes preserved fragments of a lease register of taxes of the Trogir commune from the 1430s and 1440s, i.e. from the period immediately following the establishment of Venetian rule in 1420. The register itself was undoubtedly more extensive and covered the period between 1434 and 1446, as evidenced by the original notarial pagination. Today, the fragments are preserved in two separate booklets, with the first covering the period from 1434 to 1439 kept in the State Archives in Zadar, and the second (largely unknown to the scholarly community) covering the period from 1441 to 1446 in the Museum of the City of Trogir. This source has not been previously studied in depth and, therefore, this paper will examine, reconstruct and recontextualize the preserved lease documents of the Trogir taxes. Whilst doing that, the paper will take into consideration the fragmentary data on Trogir communal revenues prior to 1420, in order to present a more complete understanding of the revenue system of the late medieval Trogir commune. On the other hand, the paper will also consider these documents as a valuable source for tracing social relations and networks in Trogir at that time, in correlation with other types of sources of Trogir provenance, which all together testify to certain social changes after the establishment of Venetian rule, i.e., after 1420. A special emphasis is put on the relation between the leaseholders (conductores or emptores) and their guarantors (fideiussores), and in the attempt to contextualize selected cases and connect them with existing knowledge about social relations in Trogir, and partly in Split, in the first half of the 15th century.
