Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate deontic modality by using the example of Croatian modal verbs moći, morati, smjeti and trebati in a legal text, and to compare them with their equivalents in the official English translation of the same text. The legal text that is used in the analysis is The Statute of the University of Zagreb which contains fundamental governance provisions of the University. The contrastive analysis aims to point out similarities and differences in the meaning and use of Croatian and English deontic modal verbs.
