Sažetak

This paper presents the activities of the Schönwald Jewish family, which contributed to the development of the city of Varaždin in the period from the second half of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. Following the Edict of Toleration promulgated by the emperor Joseph II in 1781, the Jewish community developed and managed to integrate over time, while maintaining its cultural and religious identity. The peak of development could be seen around 1900. when many Varaždin Jews, including the members of the Schönwald family, contributed to the social, cultural and economic progress of the city of Varaždin. However, with the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia in 1941, persecutions and arrests of Jews began. The paper describes the activities of the Schönwald Jewish family in the city of Varaždin, whose progress was violently interrupted by the arrival of racial and Nazi laws.
