Abstract

The goal of this work is to compare the dynamic performances of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive under various operating conditions by using different integral control actions with linear quadratic regulator (LQR) based state feedback control (SFC) technique. At first, the LQR-based conventional SFC method is used for the optimal speed control of the electric drive. Here, the transient performance of speed variations is satisfactory, but the steady state error is noticed. Therefore, a proportional-integral (PI) controller is used along with the LQR-SFC process for controlling the q-axis current of the motor. This reduces the steady state error at the expense of increased speed overshoot and settling time. Then, the LQR-SFC technique with integration of speed error (ISE)is used for controlling the speed of the motor. Here, superior transient as well as steady speed response is achieved. Next, the dynamic performances of PMSM are tested and compared between the two integral actions based LQR-SFC controllers (LQR-SFC-PI and LQR-SFC-ISE) under low- and high-speed references in MATLAB-SIMULINK software platform. The various results indicate their relative dynamic performances under the test conditions.
