Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of grammatical descriptions of the genitive plural forms of the Croatian e-declension feminine nouns with a stem ending in a consonant cluster (e.g., žalba ‘complaint’, pogreška ‘error’). Sources for the analysis are found in Croatian grammar textbooks and academic studies. These nouns exhibit two or three competing forms in the genitive plural (e.g., žalba ‘complaint’: žalbā/žalbī; pogreška ‘mistake’: pogrešākā/pogreškā/pogreškī). The paper evaluates the consistency and applicability of the rules governing the distribution of endings as presented in these resources. Furthermore, it traces the treatment of morphological doublets (overabundance) in this category across mid-nineteenth-century to contemporary Croatian grammatical works.
