Sažetak
Research presented in the paper is directly motivated by the conclusions of Pranjković’s(2013) analysis of Croatian grammatical cases from a localist perspective. Pranjkovićmaintains that the case forms in Croatian cannot denote spatial relations without socalled concretizers (i.e. prepositions, verbs of motion, prefixes on verbs and spatialnouns). The paper deals with a scarcely researched area of usage in which instrumental case is tied to verbs of emission. This usage is characteristic by the fact that instrumental case can apparently denote spatial relations without concretizers. The purpose of the paper is to explain how that happens. To that end, we rely on the method and theoretical framework of construction grammar. We demonstrate that the spatial meaning of instrumental case when connected to verbs of emission results from integration with the intransitive motion construction (Goldberg 1995). To that extent, the point of view held by Pranjković that the spatial meaning of case forms is achievable only on syntactic level is confirmed, but it is also demonstrated that his model of concretizers needs to be expanded by theory of constructions.
