Abstract
The treatise O pravopisu (‘On Orthography’) (1864), that Vatroslav Jagić wrote
when he was only twenty-six, has a prominent place not only in his opus, but also
in the wider context of the events that took place on the 19th century philological
scene for various reasons. It enabled the young Jagić to introduce himself as
an exceptional philologist whose well-founded arguments managed to seriously
shake the foundations of the renowned Zagreb Philological School as well as the
until then absolute authority of Adolfo Veber Tkalčević. At the same time, Jagić’s
support of (moderately) phonological orthography encouraged the Croatian Vukovians
who were in favour of phonological (“phonetic”) orthography. However,
Vatroslav Jagić himself was reserved towards both extremes and he stressed that
neither of the two orthographic principles – morphonological (“etymological”) or
phonological (“phonetic”) – can be fully implemented. In addition to this treatise,
Jagić’s opinions on Croatian orthography can also be found in his later works,
which also include reviews of some of the major works by the Croatian Vukovians.
