Sažetak

Jevgenij Paščenko (1950 – 2021), Croatian Ukrainianist and Slavicist, long-time
professor of Ukrainian studies in Zagreb, in his scientific research dedicated to
Vatroslav Jagić he tried to shed light on Jagić's attitude towards Ukrainians, their
language and culture at the turn of the 20th century. In his scientific work, the paper
Vatroslav Jagić i ukrajinska usmena književnost (Vatroslav Jagić and Ukrainian
oral literature) should be highlighted, as well as the study Slavist i imperiji: Vatroslav
Jagić između Galicije, Malorusije i Ukrajine (The Slavicist and the Empires: Vatroslav
Jagić between Galicia, Little Russia and Ukraine). Paščenko introduces the
Croatian reader to the broader context of Ukrainian political thought, and outlines
Jagić's professorship at the University of Odesa, as well as his mentoring work with
Ukrainian students at the University of Vienna, among which the great name of
Ukrainian literature and science - Ivan Franko - is a point of contact between Jagić
and Ukraine. Jagić and Franko will be linked by many years of acquaintance, but
also by different views on individual Ukrainian issues. Paščenko also touches on
the representation of Ukrainian philology in the Encyclopedia of Slavic Philology, a
major work edited by Jagić. He also draws attention to the efforts of Croatian Slavicists
to have Ukrainian (Little Russian) themes equally represented in Slavistic publications
of the time. Ultimately, in order to fully understand Jagić’s occasionally
ambivalent attitude towards Ukraine, Paščenko notes that depending on the place
and time, two worldviews were fighting in Jagić: that of a scientist who considered
Ukrainians a separate ethnic group and their language a separate language, and
of a Russophile politician who firmly believed in the need to preserve Slavic unity
gathered around Russia, completely rejecting the idea of Ukrainian independence.
