Abstract
Among the many letters preserved in the estate of Vatroslav Jagić at the National and University Library in Zagreb (13,553 letters are preserved), under the reference R 4610b, there are 13 letters from the renowned linguist Tomo Maretić, written at different intervals. The letters are dated: June 29, 1887, January 31, 1890, February 12, 1895, September 29, 1895, September 4, 1899, September 8, 1899, January 22, 1900, June 6, 1900, October 3, 1902, July 28, 1902, April 6, 1903, January 11, 1904, and December 6, 1904. Since Tomo Maretić was once, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, a central figure in Croatian linguistics—along with Armin Pavić and a few others—we believe his letters to Jagić reveal much that was either unknown or not recorded in the works of certain authors who wrote about the so-called Croatian “Vukovci.” These letters are accompanied by the editor’s notes, which shed light on the background and context of Maretić’s work regarding the standardization of the Croatian language based on the principles of Vuk Karadžić and Đuro Daničić, which were not at all favorable to the Croatian linguistic tradition and independent linguistic development. All the letters are transcribed in the form and language in which Maretić wrote them.
