Abstract

The historiographical treatment of World War I in Croatia over the past hundred years has been strongly influenced by dominant political and ideological factors, guiding historians towards suitable and desirable interpretations of World War I, depending on the state framework in which Croatia found itself at the time. This paper examines the dominant patterns of the treatment of World
War I in Croatian and Yugoslav historiography throughout the 20th century and provides a brief overview of recent trends in the historiography of World War I in the Republic of Croatia. Furthermore, operating with the thesis that the culture of remembrance of World War I in Croatia is nearly non-existent compared to some other societies and states that participated in it, this paper offers a brief
overview of the phenomenon of the culture of remembrance of World War I and the reasons for its absence in Croatian society. A special focus is set on the commemoration of the war’s centenary from 2014 to 2018.
