The Native Chakavian Idiom in Primary Schools in Split, Croatia

Abstract

The paper examines the representation of the native idiom in the school curricula of twenty-eight elementary schools in the city of Split in the form of extracurricular and project activities. Study has been conducted using mixed research. The first part of research investigates the ratio of representation of the mentioned activities regarding the criteria of collective presence and individual presence of the native Chakavian idiom. The representation of activities is also observed regarding the level of education, i.e. class and subject teaching. The data are compared with existing research on the representation of extracurricular content in island schools to conclude the level of inclusion of the native language component in the larger urban environment and smaller towns. The second part of the research includes the analysis of the methodological formation of the represented activities. The obtained data point to the need for additional efforts in the preservation and promotion of native idioms.
