Abstract

Dialectology as a linguistic discipline studies dialects within a language, but also the way in which their distribution in an area affects changes in the language. The aim of this paper is to show the distribution of the Chakavian and Shtokavian dialects in the territory of the Republic of Croatia by using created dialect maps. An emphasis is on the contact area of the dialects (along the Adriatic coast). The cartographic approach will be used in order to represent certain linguistic phenomena, as well as the contact areas of the two dialects. The paper will use the GIS (Geographic Information System) tool, which is widely used in modern cartography.
