Abstract

The paper describes, through three indicative moments, the work of a Croatian post-war historian Ljerka Kuntić on the Party of Rights, and especially on her emphasis of the person of Eugen Kvaternik. Having been side-lined as a “second fiddle” to the party’s founder, Ante Starčević, he emerges in Kuntić’s work as the figure of higher importance than mere romantic hero. Her activity is placed in the context of the historical moment and the development of Croatian historiography – the research of the 19th century carried the weight of explaining and grounding new system. First, we take a look at the article from 1959, written with underlying Marxist philosophy – explanation of the different parties’ position during 1861 parliamentary discussion based on the economic-proprietary possessions. Second, the dissertation “The Foreign Policy Views of the Party of Rights from 1858 to 1871”, in which she researches Kvaternik’s activity in emigration and evaluates it as the party’s foreign policy activity, polemizing with previous evaluations. Lastly, we look at her popular-historical work during the year 1971, or the so-called “Croatian Spring”. This last aspect reveals to us her involvement in the popular movement and shows the mutual influence of the historian and the moment.
