Abstract

An analysis of Miroslav Krleža’s relationship with Ante Starčević provides interesting and scientifically stimulating insight. Starčević appears relatively often, as a literary and political theme, in Krleža’s works: both in his primary literary work (for example, in the novella Veliki meštar sviju hulja, Balade Petrice Kerempuha or Predgovor ‘Podravskim motivima’ Krste Hegedušića) as well as in his politically oriented texts (for example, Prije trideset godina (1917-1947), Malograđanska historijska shema, Teze za jednu diskusiju iz godine 1935, Stjepan Radić u Beogradu). In Starčević he recognized an exceptional literary and political phenomenon, a keen and lucid observer of the Croatian reality during the second half of the 19th century, without precedented in Croatian political and literary culture. Krleža accepted him as an irreconcilable oppositionist, a man who unsparingly raised his voice against Vienna and Pest, as well as all those who mercilessly sold Croatian interests for their own gains. Finally, Krleža recognized Starčević as a sharp critic of Croatian political opportunism. This paper reflects previous research on the topic, adding also new individual examples in order to analyze the relationship between Krleža and Starčević. The paper suggests a final conclusion that Krleža accepted all of Starčević’s political teachings except for his dogmatic and constant idea of an independent Croatian state. Krleža constantly viewed the solution to the Croatian question within the Yugoslav framework and paradigm, while Starčević understood Croatian state independence as the sole solution.
