Sažetak

Although we consider ethical commissions in today’s healthcare institutions to be an indispensable part of practice, their appearance only occurred in the second half of the 20th century in the United States of America. This paper provides an overview of the events that preceded the establishment of the Committee for Admissions and Criteria of the Center for Artificial Kidney in Seattle at the Swedish Hospital, so-called. “God’s Committee”, as well as an overview of reactions and comments after the public learned about its activities through the article “They decide who lives, who dies” by Shane Alexander. In the final part of the paper, the historical and legal issues of the first ethical interdisciplinary commissions are placed in the context of the Republic of Croatia, and the current turmoil in biomedicine and healthcare, as well as society in general.
