Abstract

Written language production, whether in first language learning or foreign language acquisition,
varies in difficulty due to students’ individual differences and their cultural backgrounds.
Writing in a foreign language should be viewed as a separate field because it differs from
writing in one’s native language not only in terms of topic planning and development but
also in numerous characteristics of written language (e.g., fluency, accuracy, structure) and
language proficiency, the latter including mastery of language norms and vocabulary (Silva
1993). Since writing in a foreign language is an extremely complex activity influenced by
numerous factors, the assessment of written production is equally complex, which calls for
predefined assessment criteria.
At lower levels of foreign language proficiency, writing is more demanding because resources
are limited, and there is not much room for improvisation. Students often rely on their native
language, and sometimes even on a mediator language, most commonly English. Due to these
complexities, assessing writing at lower proficiency levels is somewhat more demanding.
Based on relevant literature and years of experience, this paper aims to offer a feasible descriptor
for assessing written production at the A2 level in Croatian as a foreign language
(CFL).
