THE 720th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VINODOL CODEX
Ivan Barbarić
Sažetak
A necessity of recording and collecting the good old customs, that were the basis of governance and law in Vinodol, lead to the composition and signing of the Vinodol Codex. This event occurred on 6 January 1288 in Novigrad, today Novi Vinodolski, in the presence of count Leonard. This oldest Croatian legal and historical and cultural document, written in Croatian language and Glagolitic alphabet, was signed by the representatives of nine Vinodol towns: Novigrad, Ledenica, Bribir, Grižane, Drivenik, Hreljin, Bakar, Trsat and Grobnik. Vinodol Codex was written down during a transition from the old municipal into the new donational-feudal order. The Codex clarifies how previously free inhabitants of Vinodol entered a dependent position. Though it appears as the act of recording the old customs followed by the regional population from the days of yore, the Codex actually introduced changes to the old law, in accord with new conditions that have arisen following 1225, when Vinodol came under the rule of Frankopans, the counts of Krk. By this document, the feudal lords ensure their legal right to economic exploitation, along with supreme legal and administrative powers. However, the lords of Vinodol weren't overthrowing the old order, but acted in a systematic and tactic fashion, adopting it to their own needs and interests.
