Abstract

The article surveys the historical-cultural heritage of Vinodol, construction in particular. The attention is mainly paid to the traditional, medieval house, especially the old house with exterior stairways (so called "balatura"). House is considered within the integral environment, i.e. with yard, plot and village milieu. The article’s inquiry focuses on the life of Vinodol peasants and the issue of such a particular house design. A historical perspective of Vinodol construction has been demonstrated through five strata, as follows: a single-storey house (stone hovel), a house with more storeys and exterior or interior stairway, a post-rural house, a city house and, finally, a tourist house. The article is a part of the report on the research of Vinodol construction heritage. The author included his detailed photographs of the majority of old Vinodol houses, along with the particulars of old architecture, as well as the results of his thorough literature and web research. This thematics is the subject of the author's book, soon to be released.
